Horses are handled from the moment they are born. By the end of the first day, they are haltered, exposed to clippers, made to lay quietly while being touched all over, and have begun to lead. At the same time, they are not allowed to be disrespectful. This treatment forms a bond with the foals that is wonderful. I do find that people who use this handling method and don’t do it right create some rascals! Done right (as with most training methods) the results are great.
For the first year the babies are haltered and handled every day. For the next year and a half, they are still handled frequently, but are turned out in groups to grow and get strong. Often they go to breed or schooling shows just to see the world.
Around 3 the youngsters are started undersaddle. Once they can walk, trot and canter quietly, they are again turned out to mature.
At 4 they go back into a light training schedule. At five they begin a full training schedule. Generally horses are sold before they are four. A few very exceptional horses are kept to train. |
